KUCHING: Batang Ai hydro dam has bright potential to be developed as a tourist destination for water sport activities, says Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

According to him, this is in view that the dam, which is the first hydroelectric dam to be built in Sarawak in 1983, is already equipped with facilities such as a hotel and resort.

“What it needs now is for those relevant to develop areas around the dam and then carry out marketing efforts much like what is being done in China, Europe and New Zealand to attract more tourists to Batang Ai,” he said when officiating the ‘Pesta Batang Ai 2019’ and Batang Ai Kitchen in Batang Ai yesterday.

He pointed out that with Batang Ai serving as a tourist destination, this in turn would also create economic opportunities to the rural community particularly those in Lubok Antu.

Awang Tengah, who is also Industrial and Entrepreneur Development Minister, suggested that they try their hands in developing eco-tourism products so as to improve entrepreneurship and the tourism industry in the constituency.

“One of the products they can look into is the kelulut honey which has been developed into various products including soaps.”

He said the Sarawak government also provides various grants to assist entrepreneurs particularly those from rural areas as well as graduates who are interested to venture into the small, medium enterprise (SME) industries.

He also advised entrepreneurs to register their products at Sarawak Pavilion, a digital market platform which promotes local products to the overseas market.

Meanwhile, Assistant Minister of Industries and Investment Malcolm Mussen Lamoh said the state government will continue to bring development to Batang Ai consituency for the benefit of the people there.

“I also have high hopes that Pesta Batang Ai can be organised once every two years with a higher allocation which in turn will benefit residents here,” said the Batang Ai assemblyman.

Also present were Assistant Minister of Entrepreneur and Small, Medium Enterprise (SME) Development Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais and Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
